Lammergeier appreciation post
The Lammergeier (Or bearded vulture/Gypaetus barbatus) is a large bird of prey (2.31–2.83 m (7.6–9.3 ft) wingspan - 4.5–7.8 kg (9.9–17 lb)) and the only member of the genus Gypaetus. It’s closest living relative is the Egyptian Vulture. Both form a minor lineage of Accipitridae but, are traditionally considered “Old World Vultures.”
The Lammergeier’s habitat covers southern Europe, North Africa, Southern Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, and Tibet where it feeds on the bones of carcasses (why it’s head is not bald like other vultures). It flies into the air, carrying the bones within it’s talons and drops them on rocks below, breaking them into pieces that can be swallowed.
The name Lammergeier is from German origins and means, ”lamb-vulture” or “lamb-hawk”.
